description On a clear day, from the summit of Mount Diablo State Park visitors can see 35 of California's 58 counties. It is said that the view is surpassed only by that of 19,000-foot Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. With binoculars, Yosemite's Half Dome is even visible from Mt. Diablo. The park features exce hiking and rock climbing opportunities. The mountain was formed when a mass of underlying rock was gradually forced up through the earth's surface so, unlike other mountains, older and older rocks are encountered as you climb t mountain. The mountain was regarded as sacred to Native Americans. Check the State Parks website for additional information on the weather, suggested day hikes, or to see the park brochure, campground map, park photos, video, and more. importantInformation Please Conserve Water - Every Drop Counts California is still experiencing a drought. The majority of the water used by park visitors at Mount Diablo State Park is produced through a series of springs that is fed to various water storage tanks. Please conserve water and make every drop count. All showers in the park have been turned off. If camping in Juniper and Live Oak Campgrounds, potable water can be found near each permanent restroom. Disabled Discount Pass or Distinguished Veterans Pass must be presented at the time of check in. Your DMV Disabled Placard/License Plate does not automatically give you a discount on your campsite. You will need to obtain a CA State park-issued Disabled Discount Pass (DDP) or Distinguished Veterans Pass (DVP). PARK GATES ARE LOCKED AT SUNSET - please plan your arrival time accordingly. Campers can register at either the North Gate Entrance Station (1250 North Gate Road, Walnut Creek) or the South Gate Entrance Station (2699 Mt Diablo Scenic Boulevard, Blackhawk). Due to narrow, windy roads with steep grades and limited visibility, cars, SUVs, and small campers 20 ft and under are okay; RVs over 20 ft long (and ANY trailers) are prohibited. The consumption of any alcoholic beverages is prohibited at Mount Diablo State Park. Between May 15th and October 1st , all campers are encouraged to call the park at (925) 837-0904 one day prior to their arrival date to ensure that the park is not closed due to "EXTREME FIRE DANGER". Fees include entry for 1 vehicle and 1 legally towed vehicle or trailer, additional vehicles will be charged per night at the park. Although your site may hold 2 or more vehicles, your reservation only covers 1 vehicle (except for group or specialty sites). Due to a shortage of water, all campgrounds have portable toilets or pit toilets. Water is NOT available at the campgrounds. Campers are encouraged to bring water for consumption. Dogs are not recommended due to extensive restrictions. Juniper Campground: Reservations available all year. Live Oak Campground: Reservations available April 1 through October 31; closed when not on reservations.
